Specifically, instead, the adventure of the models marked with the Z of Zukunft (Future in German) began in 1988, with the BMW Z1, and continued in the following years, through Z3 and Z8.
In 2002 the heir of the compact spider Z3 is presented, which evolves into the nomenclature, bearing the name of Z4. Three generations later, but with the same name, today the BMW Z4 2020 (G29 series) arrives on Italian roads, which proposes some references to the past and as many novelties. We put it to the test, both on the road and on the track, to discover its strengths and weaknesses. Let’s see how he managed.
2020 BMW Z4 Exterior
Compared to the previous model, the new BMW Z4 2020 grew in length by 85 millimeters, reaching 4.32 meters, is wider than 74 millimeters (now 1.86 meters) and 13 millimeters higher (1.30 meters). The 26 mm shortening of the wheelbase to 2.47 meters serves to refine agility, while the greater distance between the wheels, with the wider rear, allows an upper footprint and, therefore, increased stability.
After giving you the “numbers”, it’s time to move on to design. Between a generation and the other changes so much, indeed almost everything. The double kidney grille loses the horizontal slats in favor of a more sporty grid, while the LED headlights, which maintain the “angel eyes” style, no longer develop horizontally, but propose a new and discussed vertical pattern. Overall, the German two-seater has a sober, sporty and compact appearance whether the soft top is raised or lowered, thanks to the elongated bonnet and muscular lines.

As with many sports cars, all the instruments are turned towards the driver’s position; everything is focused on his driving pleasure. The passenger compartment is divided into trapezoidal areas, while the steering wheel, generation after generation, offers an increasingly thicker crown. In addition to the small screen dedicated to information on climate control, two displays capture the attention. The first is the 12.3-inch Live Cockpit Professional, completely customizable, the second is the infotainment Control Display, which measures 10.25 inches, manageable through the classic iDrive wheel or directly by touching the screen.
On the BMW Z4 2020, the Operating System 7.0 is available, which offers the latest digital functions, including advanced voice commands from the latest generations of BMWs.
As for the quality of the assemblies and the materials used, there is nothing to complain about, thanks to excellent finishes, leather and Alcantara well distributed along the entire passenger compartment. In terms of space, there is space for each height in front, with the seats and steering wheel widely adjustable, while the trunk increases its capacity by 100 liters, reaching 281 liters, both with the top closed and open of the previous model.
The engines available for the 2020 BMW Z4 are all turbos, Euro 6d-Temp and equipped with a particulate filter that reduces their emissions.
It starts with the sDrive 20i , equipped with the 2.0 TwinPower turbo of 197 hp and 320 Nm (0-100 km / h in 6.6 seconds), available both manual and 8-speed automatic, up to the 258 hp sDrive 30i and 400 Nm (5.4 seconds), still 2.0 turbo, and you get the 6 cylinders in line 3.0 of 340 hp and 500 Nm of the Z4 M40i (4.6 seconds). The last two are only available with 8-speed automatic transmission.
Consumption in the WLTP combined cycle increased from 6 l / 100 km for the Z4 20i and 30 to 7.4 l / 100 km for the Z4 M40i.
We have tested the two most powerful engines to find out where the sportiness of the 2020 BMW Z4 stops and where the more touristic side of the guide begins.
We speak respectively of 258 hp and 340 hp, not a few, of a four and a six cylinder, both supercharged. Both of them overcome the wall of the much-hated Superbowl, even if the first engine, equipped with the 2.0 4-cylinder turbo, runs on a few horses and, therefore, a few euros.
On the road, we tried the Z4 sDrive 30i, accompanied, as usual, by the 8-speed automatic transmission. From the first few kilometers you can feel that the new frame makes the car more agile and manageable, even 65 kg lighter than the previous version, almost completely saved by the use of the fabric roof (-55 kg). The total weight of the Z4 30i is around 1,430 kg, while the M40i rises to 1,535 kg.
The boost of the 2.0 turbo is felt in every situation, as well as the sound, but mainly in Sport mode, where, however, from the two tailpipes comes to a pleasant symphony, embellished by some grumbling in a release. What emerges at the same time is that, irrespective of the mode chosen with the Driving Experience Control selector (also available Eco, Comfort, and Adaptive), comfort is always excellent, thanks also to a double-joint front axle and an axle rear five-arm, which makes its debut on the 2020 BMW Z4. This solution, in fact, maintains the balance between sportiness and comfort, which never leads to the exasperation of the trim or to “bouncing” between the holes.
The choice not to adopt a sportier configuration always brings a pitch and roll to the car body, and this further strengthens our thesis of a Z4 plus Granturismo, compared to a “raw and naked” sportiness. Furthermore, the adaptive steering that adjusts both the power steering and the steering angle adapts well to any situation, making driving very pleasant, even if sometimes it does not return perfect feedback in extreme situations.
On the other hand, the 30i seems to be the perfect spider for 360 degree use , from the city, among the holes, traffic and confined spaces, to the trip outside the city, with a good deal of cavalry and rear-wheel drive, which anyway they know how to entertain, passing through the motorway sections, where the engine turns out to be not too thirsty and the great work of soundproofing allows you to travel in peace.
Speech slightly different for the 2020 BMW Z4 M40i tested on the track, where the Adaptive M Sport suspension system, the M Sport brakes and the electronically controlled mechanical differential, available as an option on 30i and included in the M40i standard equipment, make the difference together with the engine. In fact, inside the Vallelunga racetrack, we found that, no matter how “soft” the car may be, it is unlikely to break down (also due to the 50:50 weight distribution) or fatigue in the braking system, holding up very well an interesting sequence of “hot lap”. Moreover, we are talking about a circuit that is not so simple and linear, able, therefore, to solicit for good every component of the 2020 BMW Z4. Quite permissive the controls (which can be disabled almost completely), which allow a slight skidding and never neatly cut the power to the car.
On the security side, finally, there is a wide range of driver assistance systems, such as the Collision Warning, the Pedestrian Warning with City Braking function and the Lane Departure Warning system. These are standard, while an optional is Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Lane Change Warning System, Rear Collision Prevention and CrossTraffic Alert, along with the Speed Limit Info system with No Passing Info display.
