2020 Jeep Compass Trailhawk Release Date and Prices
The 2020 Jeep Compass Trailhawk has just made its debut on the market and we have had the opportunity to test it in an off-road test area. This is the version with the most developed off-road qualities of the whole, as tradition, highlighted by the name Trailhawk.
How did the 2020 Jeep Compass Trailhawk work out? Let’s find out in our test dedicated to his offroad skills.
2020 Jeep Compass Trailhawk Redesign: practical and aesthetic changes
The Compass Trailhawk offers 4 × 4 ‘Trail Rated’ performance – which means having a true Jeep performance – at the top of its class, thanks to specific standard equipment designed for customers who want the ultimate in off-road driving.
The Trailhawk version also has a height from the ground increased by about 2.5 cm, the possibility of having a black band in contrast on the hood, underbody protection plates , red rear towing hook, exclusive front and rear bands that guarantee an angle of attack of 29.1 degrees, an angle of 23.7 degrees off and an output of 33.1 degrees, 17-inch off-road tires and a ground clearance of 22.9 cm.
Inside it is base the presence of the Selec-Terrain wheel, the selection of off-road modes, which we will elaborate further on.
Driving the Compass Trailhawk: from the city to the offroad, in the blink of an eye
The offroad capabilities, a reference point in the category, are guaranteed by two advanced and intelligent 4 × 4 full-time systems: Jeep Active Drive and Jeep Active Drive Low, the latter with a reduction ratio of 20: 1. Each system is able to send 100% of the torque available to any wheel if necessary, thanks also to the intervention of the electronics. Both are equipped with the Jeep Selec-Terrain device that offers different modes (Auto, Snow, Sand, and Mud, in addition to the exclusive Rock mode specific to the Trailhawk version) to ensure maximum performance 4 × 4 on any surface, on the road or in off-road, and in any weather condition.
The 2020 Jeep Compass Trailhawk is also equipped with a rear axle disconnect device and a power transmission unit (PTU) to further reduce consumption on models with a 4×4 configuration. In fact, we have found low consumption for the category.
For even more extreme off-road performance, the Selec-Terrain also includes the Selec-Speed Control system with Hill-descent Control on the Trailhawk layout.
As we have already mentioned, we have had the opportunity to travel over an hour of the off-road route, being able to choose between three levels of difficulty. We have chosen to tackle the whole “medium” itinerary, with some sections of “hard”, dedicated almost exclusively to cars prepared to face extreme routes.
Already basic, however, the Compass Trailhawk positioned in car mode is able to read with great intelligence what type of fund we are facing, but often we had to resort to the reduced gears, the aforementioned Jeep Active Drive Low, the guarantor of a pull out ordinary. The very slippery slopes with over 70% of the slope have been dealt with in total tranquility, both with the Hill-descent and with the braking controlled by us, while the Twists have shown us how effective the system that distributes up to 100% of the driving force on each individual wheel.
In all this, the 9-speed automatic transmission has always been faithful to the driver and always very intuitive, so as to ensure traction and consistency during steep climbs and descents. Well, also the steering that, however, we would have preferred slightly more direct.
After this interesting adventure. we can certainly say that among compact SUVs the Compass Trailhawk is undoubtedly one of the cars with the best off-road skills.
