Sure, the 2020 Audi e-Tron GT is an electric car. But if you did not know that, he would be a sleek four-door car of the Ingolstadt with a design almost as iconic as that of the legendary Audi 100 Coupé. We took a close look at it, took a seat and went for a test drive over the rough asphalt of Los Angeles.
The first impression: long, ducked, a real GT. And so flat that the hood has about seat height for normal people. That looks very auspicious. The only indication of the electric drive is the – as usual with the e-Tron models – inverted and closed single frame. But next to it gape so big vents that even the electric coupe looks greedy. Above all, the e-Tron GT is unmistakably an Audi, a modern one.
In the rear, the continuous light strip with the arrow LEDs facing inward reminds of the A7 anyway, with which the 2020 Audi e-Tron GT has the proportions in common. At practically the same length (4.96 meters), the e-Tron is four centimeters flatter and five inches wider, which does not miss its effect. The 22-inch wheels fill the Urquattro-style offensive issued wheel arches perfectly and do the rest, that the viewer trusts the GT a lot of power – no one would be surprised about the ruckus. But that should remain discreet: Instead of thick exhaust tailpipes closes a conspicuous staged black diffuser with red illuminated e-Tron lettering the rear.

Enough around the car, we wanted to sit sample. There is also much to discover in the four-door version: the cockpit layout is rather classic: easy driver-oriented center console, handle-friendly steering wheel with the angular middle section, but without much controls. Ok, the instruments are digital; but in combination with the two central touch screens for infotainment and air conditioning in the same black panel look, this looks just fine.
The instrument panel runs with an edgy metal strip across the entire width to the door trim. The windshield is relatively steep, which brings the driver closer to the bonnet. The clarity forward is good back bad. The seats are taut, but comfortable and tie a nice in the car – you get great desire to try out what the 590 hp can do in conjunction with all-wheel drive and four-wheel steering so.
The electric drive you like to bring with environmental friendliness in connection, which is in view of the high performance but such a thing, especially as long as the power is not generated sustainably. Maybe Audi is therefore important that the interior is made of sustainable materials. This is already known from the BMW i3, but Audi goes one step further: The use of products of animal origin completely dispensed with the e-Tron GT Bauer: The interior is “vegan”. The seats and cladding are made of synthetic leather, and the seats, armrests and center console have textiles made from recycled fibers. The deep-pile carpet is made of sustainable only yarn, a recycled fiber made from used fishing nets. Do not worry, you will not smell it! Even otherwise, sustainability requires no concessions. The materials make a high-quality impression and feel good.

Where the shoes dive into the carpet, the 96 kWh battery placed on the vehicle floor has recesses. The so-called Fußgaragen (Porsche Taycan) prevent larger rear passengers with his knees to hold his ears – that is: For the legs is space down, although the seats are fitted low to fit the flat body. The knee room is sufficient behind; in view of the often invoked installation space advantages of the electric drive, one would have expected almost more with a wheelbase of 2.90 meters. For the 2020 Audi e-Tron GT should swallow a lot of luggage: 450 rear and front another 100 liters. However, that could not be tested on the concept car: The boot lid remained closed. So you could only recognize that the e-Tron GT is not intended for bulky, because the large tailgate is missing – in favor of stiffness. After all, he should be a sports car.

No sooner has the 2020 Audi e-Tron GT made its world premiere as a concept car at the Los Angeles Auto Show 2018, and it has already been available far away from the trade fair stand for a first driving impression.
The omens were bad. It started raining in Los Angeles at night. Ironically in sunny California. Concept vehicles do not like rain. They have no windshield wipers and no gutters. They are only allowed out when the road is mostly dry.
We meet Downtown LA, not far from Broadway. Where Hollywood beauties say hello as well as people without a roof over their heads. We are lucky. The rain stops, the e-throne GT is allowed out. Very carefully. The air-sprung suspension is adjusted by hand, it provides little ground clearance and every pothole, any bump could add to the precious unique difficult. The Audi technicians finally bring their 4.96-meter-long treasure from the underground car park before looking at them with restless eyes, for the first time a journalist, Pardon, in this case, a journalist, sits down on public roads for a very first driving impression – for security reasons flanked by policemen on motorcycles.
Before the 590 hp electric Gran Turismo can start, the doors must first be opened. Fingertip on a small sensor field and it works – nothing. 2020 Audi e-Tron GT Performance
The seats are tight, but not too tight. They once give the comforting feeling of being in good hands even on long-distance routes – according to WLTP, the E-Renner achieves 430 kilometers of range, and we know from practical experience that this can be significantly less – especially if you go from zero to 100 km / h in the factory specification of 3.5 seconds to challenge or more often times to accelerate to the Vmax of 240 km / h.
Of course, that’s not possible in downtown LA. It would be too bad because people want to look at the car. Admire. Enjoy. There’s a whole family laughing. People who pull their smartphone to take pictures. Philipp Römers, who won the design competition with universities from all over the world as a student at auto motor und sport in 2004 and is now one of the top executives in Audi design in his role as a studio manager in exterior design, is thrilled. The years of detail work has been worthwhile, people like the car, which will share its base in the future with the Porsche Taycan. He comes a little earlier, in late 2019.
Throttle and the GT shoot away. Sure, brake immediately before the next traffic light, we are finally in a densely populated metropolis of millions, and the cops are there. The first impression: the Elektor coupe wants to show more, but it should not be here yet. With the bumps of the US roads, he struggles, but that’s not to blame him: First, the roads are much worse than ours and secondly, the chassis is still far from the series trim.
The steering acts extremely smoothly while turning Audi’s third e-car can playfully move. Only the small rear window requires compromises. If you are dreaming of the GT, you should already put in mind the parking sensors – if the cost of a car in the dimension of about 100,000 € purchase price extra. You will definitely need them.
In his appearance, he is far from being a strange e-car dreamy world improver. The four-door e-Tron proudly displays its single-frame grill, which was once invented by legendary VW design chief Walter de Silva. In the meantime, he’s in ladies’ shoes. In the team of the current Audi design chief Marc Lichte, exterior design chief Andreas Mindt (you guessed it, both won the auto motor and sports design competition with universities from all over the world long before Philipp Römers) is one of the pioneering designers of the Audi design line. And the promises that we will find many styling elements of the 2020 Audi e-Tron GT on other models in the series. That’s good.
We are sure to maneuver the e-throne GT back in the meantime. Too bad he will not be on the market until 2020. But nice that he also likes passers-by who can not afford it.
2020 Audi e-Tron GT Review – Verdict
Yes, the e-Tron GT is technically a Porsche Taycan. But apart from that, the Ingolstadt did not make it easy in their interpretation of the electric coupe: exterior and interior design have what it takes to further develop the brand’s design line as a whole. Future-oriented: Joint technology will become more common with the electric drive in the large corporation, the differentiation over other features must become the rule. And Audi’s next flat-bottomed car will at least be on the premium platform Elektro (PPE), which Audi and Porsche are developing together.
That driving in the Audi E-Tron GT will be fun was demonstrated by the first kilometers in Los Angeles. Even if the coupe under the sheet is still far from the series: seating position and deduction already give a promising outlook on the subsequent driving experience with Porsche technology.
