2019 Dacia Duster 4×4 Review: Performance, MPG, Price: Dacia Duster, the SUV par excellence in the Dacia range, has impressed its brand in this segment, winning over 7 years a clientele looking for a reliable, and above all economic, practical vehicle.
In the nascent segment of SUVs, it was 2010, Dacia took up the challenge by focusing on an affordable vehicle, already launched on the market with the famous ” starting from 11,900 euros “, after only 2 years of Dacia Duster 450,000 units were sold. In 2013 comes the first strong restyling of this success and, time to arrive today with record results on all markets. We have tried the 2019 Dacia Duster 4×4 to understand how robust it is
2019 Dacia Duster 4×4 Redesign
The new model of 2019, built on the same platform, remains similar to the previous version but modernized thanks to new optical groups with LED daytime running lights and a larger grille that incorporates the line of the other models of the house. The interior has been completely redesigned to increase comfort and perceived quality and all-new driver assistance devices are new. At the same time, in order to repeat the success of the first Duster, the will to maintain an ergonomic, modern but at the same time, the robust, reliable and versatile vehicle is solid.
the Orange Atacama paint was optional (600 euros, like all metallic paints). The only paint without surcharge is the Navy Blue.
Even the interiors on the 2019 Dacia Duster 4×4 have been redesigned and renewed compared to the previous generation. The central console integrates a Media Nav screen (with resistive screen) positioned higher up and oriented towards the driver, to the advantage of accessibility and legibility, the system proposes, among others, also an eco-coaching function that allows the driver to optimize driving.
The center console incorporates new controls in the form of piano keys, which made us feel aboard a premium level car. Thanks to the decentralized handbrake there is also room for a new storage compartment and a short distance, on the four-wheel drive versions, we find the wheel for the settings of the 4X4 system. Too bad for the uncomfortable USB socket located in the right corner of the central screen.
In short, the new 2019 Dacia Duster 4×4 has made a clear step forward in terms of internal quality. And if before the plastics were cheap, now they are always rigid, but much more refined. A small ergonomic incongruity are the power windows controls too far back or the steering wheel buttons not illuminated, but overall the Duster has improved a lot in these eight years. Let’s say, without the fear of falling into the superfluous, that more or less valuable fabrics or various stitching would have almost jarring on the new Dacia Duster. She is so, winning in its simplicity.
The new generation is also the first of the brand to benefit from an automatic climate system (optional from 250 euros, standard on Prestige fittings), with an air distribution that favors high apertures, boring not just those who want more intervention soft. Really appreciable the excellent Multiview camera, able to provide four different views around the car and, if compared to other competitors, sorry for the pun, highly competitive (they are yours for 200 euros). They have activated at any time thanks to the special button on the piano keyboard (exceeded 20 km/h) while, as standard, with the Prestige there is the rear camera, useful given the small size of the rear window.
Habitability for four adults is not a problem, only the fifth is tight. It also improves comfort with more enveloping seats, more legroom and adjustable steering wheel both in height (40 mm) and in-depth (50 mm). The driver’s seat is equipped with an armrest, lumbar adjustment and a new height adjustment mechanism. We would have liked the seat more inclined towards the rear, in order to unload the weight on the whole leg. At least the seat cushion has been extended by 20 mm for comfort.
The 2019 Dacia Duster 4×4 Trunk compartment volume, under the parcel shelf, is 478 l for the 4X2 version and 467 l for the 4X4 version, not bad for the category, which can arrive, with a reclined sofa, up to 1.623 l. For those who need extra space, you can also count on a practical compartment located under the passenger seat (Comfort Pack), with a capacity of 2.8 l.
Finally, the new Dacia Duster offers the keyless system for opening the doors with a key in the pocket (optional 200 euros), with a somewhat peculiar operation, which automatically locks the doors when the driver approaches the vehicle and stops them when moves away, with no buttons whatsoever on handles or doorman. Beware of the acoustic signal that warns you of the closure: it can get boring but it can be disabled.
2019 Dacia Duster 4×4 Specs – 1.5BluedCi 115hp
The New Duster is equipped, as always, with a range of engines of the Renault Group, for our test we chose the 1.5 dCi diesel version of 110 hp 4×4, with a 6-speed manual transmission in the top of the Prestige range.
At first, the engine seemed very relaxed, and knowing the French unit mounted on Renault and Mercedes (Class A) the accounts did not return. Once the “ECO” button was disengaged, the small millecinque proved to live up to our expectations: a small engine, but complicit 260 Nm at 1,750giri proves suitable to move the small Romanian SUV. The push is sufficient, the progression is constant and effective, as evidenced by a discrete 0-100 in 12.5 seconds and a “tip” of 168 km/h.
But if we are to see, driving on the road is not the strong point of the Duster that boasts of a steering and quite touristic structure. Forcing the suspension are quite soft and the roll is high, in the fast changes of direction then you have not really braked cash flow. At the wheel, in short, the Dacia Duster proves to be a valid family car, does not run in any field, but is still pleasant and safe. But it leads to destination without worries, accomplices the soluble checks in avoiding any excess in advance and thanks to the offroad suspensions the obstacles are well digested, more forward and less in the rear.
Particular attention was paid by the Dacia technicians to the acoustic insulation of the vehicle, in the 2019 Dacia Duster 4×4. The sound-absorbing surfaces in the passenger compartment and in the engine compartment have increased from 20% to 50%, the thickness of the windows is increased by 0.35 mm in the front part and finally also the reduction of acoustic losses due to the application of mastic or of shutters. But if, however, the general noise level has improved, we are not yet at the level of the competitors, especially as regards the 4 × 4 transmission noise and the hisses of the transfer case on some engine revolutions.
The 1.5 never disappoints, especially regarding consumption that in the mixed cycle is attested on 17 km / l (the onboard computer at the end of the test was 5.7 l / 100 km), less on the motorway where the Duster is disadvantaged by an ‘aerodynamics not very cured (Cx 0.42) and a short ratio, ideal for offroad, less for the three lanes, where at 130 km / h the engine is driven at 2,800 rpm . With 50 liters of a tank at least 750 km are guaranteed. The best is guaranteed instead in the city where the high driving and the steering angle contained are the masters.
2019 Dacia Duster 4×4 offroad: without problems
Being a four-wheel drive car we could not exempt ourselves from testing the performance of the Dacia Duster even in offroad where it confirms its ease as the previous model. The generous ground clearance of 210 mm, the very short overhangs with angles to overcome accentuated obstacles ( 30 ° attack, 21 ° hump and 34 ° exit ), unchanged, weighs about 1,300 kg. For off-road lovers, the 4 × 4 Monitor integrated into the Media Nav allows access to useful information such as rolling and pitching angles as well as being equipped with a compass.
The front end McPherson has been specially reinforced for the off-road and the rear axle is modified, from a torsion bridge (4 × 2) to multilink with independent wheels (4×4). The transmission was then designed with a very short first gear, which simulates a reduced gear for uneven ground, but in general, all the gears up to the fifth are fairly short with a sixth of rest.
The presence of Hill Descent Control is excellent, which increases the control of the vehicle in the event of steep slopes and Hill Start Assist, which facilitates driving in the most difficult conditions. There is also the Blind Spot Warning system consisting of four ultrasonic sensors located at the four corners of the vehicle. Very good also the steering angle and the general feeling with the steering. Too bad for the only three stars at EuroNCAP crash tests.
2019 Dacia Duster 4×4 Price & Rivals
With 2019 Dacia Duster 4×4r, the naming of the Dacia range is also updated. The first level is now called Access (the one from 11.900 euros), we move to the Essential (+950), while the heart of the range will be the Comfort (+1.700 from Essential). The top of the range is represented by the exclusive Prestige version (+1.000 from Comfort). If you want an average rich petrol version with € 14,300 you will have the Comfort. If you are incontestable and want everything you get to 19.300 euros for the top of the range1.5 dCi 110hp 4×4 in Prestige, an object of our test, enriched by the presence of 17-inch alloy wheels with Maldives design, automatic air conditioning, and Blind Spot Warning. Optional extras include seats with leather and heated inserts (650 euros).
Finally, there are several packs available: the Pack Control (650 euro) that offers Navigator Media Nav Evolution, leather steering wheel, and cruise control. The Modularity Pack (250 euro) that offers height-adjustable driver’s seat, 2 / 3-1 / 3 split hatchback and height-adjustable steering wheel. The Comfort Pack (150 euro) with drawer under the passenger seat, central armrest, lumbar support, and adjustment. The Pack Look (500 euros) with front and rear underbody guards, Dark Metal Rearview mirrors and Dark Metal roof bars, rear windows and dark rear windows.
The main competitors for size and category are the 2020 Ford Ecosport, the Nissan Juke, the Opel Mokka, the Peugeot 2008, the Renault Captur, the Suzuki Sx4, all, however, more expensive but also more equipped.
In a nutshell, the 2019 Dacia Duster 4×4 has improved from many points of view, especially comfort, while maintaining its DNA and the strengths that made it famous. If we add to this that the price has not changed, it is not a gamble to say that it is the best choice for those looking for an essential car with so much substance, perhaps with four-wheel drive. The restyling of mid-career has made it more modern and graceful, but its nature that has derided its success, fortunately, has not been lost. And that’s exactly what Duster likes: an economic means, handyman and suitable to be mistreated without worries, like no other SUV knows, or wants, to be.
